Tom Allon : Mandate Foreign Language Education

The United States is falling behind in international education standards, and one area where we lack a clear advantage is in being able to communicate in languages spoken in foreign countries.

For example, in France, all students are required to pick a foreign language in 6th grade, which each student will continue to learn until 12th grade. And then, in 8th grade, students against pick a second foreign language, which the student will learn concurrently with the first, all the way until 12th grade. In France, students graduate with proficiency in speaking three languages : French, and their two elective foreign languages.

Meanwhile, in the United States, we are lucky if students graduate with fluency in just one language. Leadership provided by Tom Allon's proposal would improve our education standards, not the least of which would also foster a truly global sensibility among America's youth.

Christine Quinn Still Has Her Hands In The Cookie Jar

In 2008, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced that all groups petitioning for slush funds would need to submit their solicitations through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. At the end of 2010, Speaker Quinn was still doling out slush funds, and she alone had the final say.

Speaker Christine Quinn announced on April 11, 2008, that all groups that want money from the approximately $20 million speaker's discretionary slush fund will have to go through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

Over two and a half years after she got caught with her ''hands in the cookie jar,'' The New York Times reported that Speaker Quinn still had the ''final say'' in how the slush funds are distributed.

True News From Change NYC Blog Has Been Restored

Breaking News ! Update on True News From Change NYC Blog

Gary Tilzer's blog, True News From Change NYC, about New York government corruption, political reporting, and other commentary about government transparency, has been restored. Earlier today, it had been discovered that the True News blog had been suspended by Google for inexplicable reasons overnight. The suspension of the blog had become a focal point of support today by many New York bloggers and activists. No reason for the suspension is yet known, but New York bloggers suspect political censorship might have been one motive behind the removal of the blog.
